Hello and welcome to diggingupthepast.co.uk
We are a husband-and-wife team with a shared passion for metal detecting, local history, and uncovering the stories hidden beneath our feet. Whether we're searching farmland, pasture, woodland, beaches, or the coastline, our goal is simple: to discover and preserve pieces of history that might otherwise remain lost forever. Metal detecting is much more than a hobby to us—it's a way of connecting with the past and learning about the people who lived, worked, and travelled through the places we explore today. Every button, coin, buckle, or artefact has a story to tell, and we enjoy researching and sharing those stories whenever possible.
Responsible detecting
- Fully insured.
- Follow the recognised Metal Detecting Code of Conduct.
- Respect crops, livestock, boundaries, and the countryside.
- Carefully fill all holes.
- Remove all rubbish found.
- Leave land exactly as we found it.
- Always seek permission before detecting.
Information for landowners
If we are fortunate enough to discover finds of historical interest, we would be delighted to share them with the landowner. Our focus is not financial gain, but historical discovery, learning, and helping preserve local heritage for future generations. Throughout the year, we also collect modern non-spendable coins and similar items recovered during our searches. Rather than keeping them, we donate them to charity where they can be exchanged and used to support good causes. We are always looking for new land to explore with permission and would be grateful to hear from landowners who may be open to allowing responsible metal detecting on their property. We are happy to provide insurance details, answer any questions, and meet in person so you can put faces to names before making any decision.
